Tug and barge sank in Galena Par

Tue Oct 20 09:28:27 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Annie Moon" sank together with a barge about two miles east of the Interstate 610 bridge across from the Kinder Morgan terminals in Galena Par on Oct 19 at 7 p.m. The crew of the tug "Enterprise" which was across the ship channel from the incident, called the vessel traffic service when they heard lines parting as the ships foundered. The Coastguard closed a 1,000-yard section of the upper Houston Ship Channel to deep draft ship traffic around. Barge traffic was allowed to continue but was moving slowly. The 25-foot harbour tug and a 200-foot barge attached to it went down at their mooring close to Vince Bayou and near the Kinder Morgan ship dock in Galena Park. Problems began when the barge which was carrying 60 to 80 foot long sheets of two-foot wide metal, began taking on water around 5 a.m. The barge ended up three-quarters submerged and the tug completely underwater near the channel’s bank. There were no crew members on board when it happened. Around 20 gallons from a total of 300 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the tug and USCG used equipment to contain the spilled material. The heavy lift cargo crane "Big John" was expected to arrive in the afternoon at 1 p.m. and begin the task of removing the vessels from the channel.
