Crew member who fell over board rescued on the Elbe

Sat Dec 02 19:11:41 CET 2023 Timsen

a crew memmer, aged 29, fell overboard from the “Athina L” on the Elbe near Otterndorf between the buoys 44 and 46 on Dec 1, 2023, at around midnight. The Cuxhaven traffic center of the Waterways and Shipping Administration alerted the MRCC in Bremen, which deployed the lifeboat 'Anneliese Kramer' from the DGzRS station in Cuxhaven. Other vessels wch were nearby offered assistance too. The patrol boat 'Bürgermeister Weichmann” also rushed to scene. An SAR helicopter of the Navy was also alerted. The “Athina L” remained in the sea area, but with its 190 meters length it was severely restricted in maneuverability. The dredger “Pieter Caland” discovered the light on the life jacket of the sailor and managed to maneuver close to him. man climbed on board using the pilot's ladder. The lifeboat was on site about half an hour after the initial alarm. Two sea rescuers from the boat boarded the “Pieter Caland” to provide the sailor with initial medical care. The rescued man was responsive. After his body temperature had returned to normal values, they took him onto the lifeboat and took him to Cuxhaven at top speed. About two hours after he fell overboard, they handed him over to an ambulance for transport to the hospital. At the time of the accident, the weather in the area was calm with light snowfall, an air temperature of around minus one degree Celsius and a water temperature of five degrees Celsius. Athina L saved single handed sailor

Wed Nov 06 10:48:54 CET 2013 Timsen

On Nov 4, 2013, the Coast Guard coordinated a good Samaritan crews rescue of a sailor approximately 700 miles east of Cape Cod at approximately 5 a.m. Watchstanders from the 1st Coast Guard District command center in Boston were notified at approximately 8 a.m. of an emergency beacon signal registered to the 34-foot Canadian flagged sailing vessel "Easy Go". A Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, Md., HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew immediately launched to locate the "Easy Go". The district command center watchstanders also contacted available vessels in the area to assist. The vessel "Bishu Highway" and the "Athina L" were able to assist. The "Bishu Highway" arrived on scene at approximately 2:45 p.m. and established communications with the "Easy Go". The only sailor on board reported that he was uninjured, but the boat had lost its main sail and he was unable to make way. The "Bishu Highway" was unable to rescue the sailor due to a 50-foot height of the hull above water, but was able to stay on scene until the "Athina L" could assist. The "Athina L" arrived on scene at approximately 5 a.m. on Nov 5 and safely rescued the sailor. The sailor will continue to the "Athina L"'s next port of call of Hunterston, U.K. Report with photos: http://www.uscgnews.com/go/doc/4007/1952730/Coast-Guard-coordinates-AMVER-rescue-700-miles-east-of-Cape-Cod-photos-available-#sthash.pZhFKgmW.dpuf
