Trawler no longer at risk of sinking
24 hours after the start of the extraction work, the contaminated water that had accumulated in the hold and engine room of the "Awadi" during the firefighting operations, was completed on Sep 4. 100 tons of the mixture of oils and hydrocarbons, and the foam used to extinguish the flames, were removed in addition to a total of 35 tons of fishing gear, fishing equipment, and other items from the ship's deck and other areas. These items were now stored on a gated property in the town awaiting a decision on their disposal. With the reduction of 150 tons of weight, the ship could gradually regain stability. The list has dropped from 40 degrees to eight degrees, and everything indicates there was no risk of sinking or causing any pollution in the Arousa estuary. The fire was declared under control but remained active, with a small fire in the bow and another in a storage room on the bridge. However, the fire was confined and posed no danger. By mid-afternoon, the Fire Department and the General Emergency Management Agency (GAEM) withdrew from the area but remained alert to any eventuality. Security personnel was on hand as a deterrent measure and to intervene if necessary. The Port Police have been in charge of this security issue in recent days, while the Local Police took over at night. Fire burning third consecutive day
The 'Awadi' continued to burn silently for the third consecutive day on Sep 3, while tons of contaminated water were extracted. With two fires still active, although under control, the ship remained afloat. One fire was active on the stern and another in the fishing area, advancing through the bowels of the ship, consuming the large amount of oil, hoses, and wiring inside. Firefighting teams did not see a risk of explosion. The ship's owner sent two Ingaroil tanker trucks in case it would become necessary to extract the 20 tons of fuel inside, although, for now, it was not considered necessary. On the afternoon the extraction of the large amount of contaminated water that had accumulated inside the ship (due to a leak that could have been plugged and due to the extinguishing efforts, was extracted. The extraction was not without its difficulties, as the hoses became clogged. Trawler will burn for several days, still at risk of sinking
On Sep 2 at around 5:00 p.m., work began to try to reduce the 40-degree list of the 'Awadi' and right it. When the tug "Gonzalo de Remolcanosa", which had previously held it wedged against the quayside, detached, the vessel remained immovable. It was discovered that a bilge valve was performing the opposite function and was pouring water into the hold, which was hampering the maneuvers. Therefore, it was decided to mobilize a pair of divers, who managed to plug it from the outside. Then the fishing vessel began to return to its normal position with the objective to prevent it from sinking. The intense smoke and temperatures —between 900 and 1,000 degrees Celsius—prevented access to the interior, and cooling from outside was continued. On Sep 3, the fire was declared to be under control, and the vessel was described as stable. However, during the morning, two more spots were ignited: one in the stern and another in the fishing area. The fire was advancing through the bowels of the vessel, consuming a large amount of oil, hoses, and wiring. While the ship's owner was arranging to hire a company to extract the 20 tons of fuel in the tanks, Portos de Galicia deployed an anti-pollution barrier at 11 a.m. as a precaution, specifically in preparation for this operation, which was to be carried out in the coming hours. A company specializing in hydrocarbon treatment will also extract the water from the hold, as it contained contamination from the ship's own machinery. The Ribeira firefighters and members of the Municipal Emergency and Relief Group (GAEM) monitored the operation of three bilge pumps, with the mission of moving them around the vessel until they reached the engine room, Once the fire is out, the owner intended to transfer the wreck to the port of Marín, presumably for scrapping. However, the fuel extraction, extinguishing the fire, and obtaining the required authorization from the Vilagarcía de Arousa Port Authority still needed to be completed. Given the flammable materials inside the vessel, the fire and smoke were expected to continue for several days. The list could be reduced from 40 degress to 25 degrees, To improve the stability, about 30 tons of various materials were removed on Sep 2. Regarding the cause of the fire, an investigation was to be opened by the shipowner's insurance company. The fire started in the engine room, which was undergoing repairs. Everything indicated that a spark from a weld started the fire, which quickly spread to the rest of the vessel. Formerly "Baobab" and "Kågtind," the aging vessel was built in Norway and was in service since 1980. In 2018, it was transferred to the flag of Guinea-Bissau and in July 2024 to its current flag. It is listed as owned by Rim Asmak Sarl, owner of the fishery products exporter Asmak Fish, although its owner is based in Santiago de Compostela.
