Search for missing boater suspended

The 'Steelhead' along with other Coast Guard units started a search for Jeffrey Kale, 47, from Clover, South Carolina, on April 6, 2024, after the Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders received a notification at around 10:30 p.m. from Kale’s family stating he was overdue from a fishing trip aboard a white 32-foot Cape Horn center-console boat. The active search for him was suspended on April 8 at 8:20 p.m., after the rescue crews searched for approximately 72 combined hours and covered more than 7,762 square miles. Rescue crews involved in the search: were a Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130 Hercules airplane, response boats from the Coast Guard Stations Oak Island and Wrightsville, mltiple good Samaritan boaters and the patrol boat.

Coast Guard Cutter suspended search for missing boater

The 'Steelhead' along with other Coast Guard assets was involved in the response to a boat accident off the coast of Oregon Inlet, North Carolina, from March 4-5, 2024, at approximately 6:34 p.m. The GoodRun, a 30-foot recreational vessel, drifted aground heavily damaged 2,5 miles south of Oregon Inlet, on March 4, 2024. Missing was the 36-year-old Chad Dunn and deceased was the 65-year-old Capt. Charlie Griffin. His pet dog Leila was also found deceased. Watchstanders with the Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center received a report of two overdue boaters on March 3, at approximately 11:35 p.m. The pair departed from Virginia Beach and were enroute to Pirate’s Cove Marina, Manteo, for repairs. The search lasteed for 41 hours, and 12 search patterns were conducted, which covered approximately 400 miles by air, sea and on shore with local partners. At the time the pair were reported missing, the visibility was a little over half a mile, seas at 4-6 feet, and wind 10-15 knots. North Carolina Fish and Wildlife launched an investigation into the incident. Crews involved in the search included: - Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet; - Coast Guard Cutter Steelhead; - Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City; - National Park Service; - NC Fish and wildlife: - Dare County Sheriff’s Office.
