Grounded ship dismantled on site
Removal efforts of the 'Chrisdul' comenced on Oct 12, 2021. The ship had run aground in bad weather in the Famagusta Palm Beach Region on Dec 22, 2016, and was now to be disassembled and removed from the site. The vessel status was changed to dead and the case file closed by the Harbour Master and the Maritime Authority as of Nov 20, 2018. The dismantling works are being carried out by the Izmir Aliaga Ship Breaking Recycling company, which has purchased the ship. The work of the teams provided by the company is expected to be completed within five days. The vessel will be dismantled and removed on site. All necessary permissions were provided, and all measures were taken to prevent any environmental pollution.
Wreck removal to be continued
End of April 2018, removal operations at the "Chrisdul" were yet to be resumed. Demolishing work had been interrupted in the winter season. When the vessel dragged anchor and grounded at Famagusta Anchorage due bad weather on Dec 22, 2016, it had suffered structural damages to the side shell and bottom with ensuing water ingress. Aground off Famagusta
The "Chrisdul" was spotted remaining hard aground in position 35°07'25"N 033°57'21"E off Famagusta on May 9, 2017. The ship has been moored off the port since almost two years when it was driven onto rocks on Dec 22, 2016, in a violent storm at Palm Beach. Barriers and absorbent cloths were place around the ship to protect against any pollution. Experts said that the removal of the vessel would have to be carried out meticulously and could cost more than the total value of the ship.
