Death toll now at three, one man still missing

The death toll in the fire aboard the "Coastal Jaguar" has risen to three, with two others succumbing to their injuries on Aug 19. The two who died undergoing treatment have been identified as Tasarapu Bharadwaj (23) of Visakhapatnam and Ansar Ulhak (39) of Kolkata. While Bharadwaj suffered 90% burns, Ansar had 65% burns and both were on ventilator in the ICU (intensive care unit) at Mycure Hospital since Aug 18 when Juvin Joshi (24) of Ernakulam, Kerala, who suffered 45% burns was shifted to Mumbai for further treatment. After the fire 27 of the 29 crew members were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard and officials of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust. While the body of Ashish Kumar, a native of Rajasthan, was found by the Coast Guard on the day of the accident, another crew member, Vicky Chowhan was still missing, and the search was continued. Of the 27 rescued, 15 were admitted to the My Cure Hospital and and five were discharged on the same day after basic treatment. The remaining 10 who suffered burns ranging from 30 to 90%. A team has been formed to inquire into the fire accident aboard the vessel and a casualty investigation report will be produced shortly.

Two dead in explosion and fire

After the Coast Guard and the Coastal Security Police rescued 27 crew members and workers off Vizag coast from the blazing "Coastal Jaguar" near Visakhapatnam Port, it turned out that 15 had suffered burns. Five were discharged after treatment, 10 have been admitted to a local hospital with 50% to 60% burns, and one of them who received 90% burns is said to be critical. On the whole 29 persons were on board. One body was found floating in the water, and another person was still missing, and a search was on to trace him. The deceased person was identified as Ashish Kumar of Rajasthan while the missing person was identified as Vicky Chauhan of Uttar Pradesh, On Aug 12 at 11.30 a.m the ship had caught fire one to two nautical miles from the mouth of the Visakhapatnam harbour and one mile from the coast. There was a loud explosion on board the vessel, thereafter the vessel was engulfed in thick flames. All of the crew and workers jumped into the sea, abandoning the ship. The Indian Coast Ship "Rani Rashmon"i, which was on patrolling duty in the vicinity rushed to the spot and in coordination with VPT boats and Coastal Security Police, rescued the 27 crew members and workers. The ICGS "Samudra Paheredar", Coast Guard helicopter and the fast interceptor boat ICGS "C-432" joined the operation. It took over eight hours to bring the flames under control, as the sea was rough. The Mumbai-based vessel had been in the dry dock in Visakhapatnam and was on trial on Aug 12 after a 40-day refit and overhaul. The ship was on contract to HPCL. The injured have been identified as Y Sattibabu (39, East Godavari), Ramnivas Yadav (64, Haryana), Kamalakanth (24, Bihar), Kannayya (44, Gujarat), Mukesh Kumar (35, Haryana), Shyam K Arjun (25, Kerala), Manjit Kumar (27, Uttar Pradesh), Rakesh Kumar (27, Jharkhand), Rohit Chauhan (31,Uttar Pradesh), Chintapalli Tandelu (Srikakulam), Jasveer Singh (Uttar Pradesh), Vanamadi Annavaram (East Godavari), Juvin Joshi (Kerala), Ansar Ullakh (Kolkata), Rohit Chauhan (Uttar Pradesh). One missing after explosion and fire

29 crew members of the "Coastal Jaguar" had to jump into the waters off the Andhra Pradesh coast near Visakhapatnam on Aug 12, 2019, after a fire broke out on the vessel at 11.30 a.m. n explosion, black smoke billowed out of the shi within a few minutes, so that the crew had to jump into the water to save themselves from the burning vessel. One sailor waas missing, while the rest has been rescued by the Coast Guard. The Indian Coast Guard's fast patrol vessel "Rani Rashmoni", which was sailing nearby, was diverted to the burning vessel to coordinate the SAR operation with boats of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust. Two more Coast Guard patrol boats and a helicopter were at the site assisting in the rescue work and firefighting operations. Also the ICGS 'Samudra Paheredar' and the 'ICGS C-432' were deployed to the site.
