Ferry withdrawn from service after suspected humpback collision

Mon Aug 06 11:28:27 CEST 2012 Timsen

Investigators were investigating whether a humpback calf was hit by a Manly ferry in the morning of Aug 6, 2012. The calf was found with superficial injuries but was swimming. The "Collaroy" was taken out of service after it struck an unknown object off the Clifton Gardens area during the 8.40 a.m. service from Circular Quay to Manly. The vessel suffered damage to a propeller blade and was withdrawn from service and taken to the Balmain shipyard to be examined by a diver. No other services were affected.

COLLAROY

Tue Jan 18 10:23:09 CET 2011 Timsen

The "Collaroy" broke down while approaching Manly Wharf on Jan 17, 2011, morning. The ferry had to drop anchor off Manly after suffering mechanical difficulties. Minutes earlier, it narrowly avoided hitting a yacht. The "Collaroy" came within inches of hitting the boat before it dropped anchor and drifted about 20 metres more. They finally got the engines going again after a jetcat of Sydney Fast Ferries towed to safety. At about 9.30am the vessel was able to restart engines and proceeded to Manly Wharf. Passengers finally disembarked at 9.50 a.m., about half an hour after the ferry’s scheduled arrival. The vessel then departed Manly Wharf without passengers to conduct engine trials in the outer harbour. On Jan 18, 10 a.m., the ship was berthed at Sydney Cove Overseas Passenger Terminal. Mr Postle said he loved the old ferries and hoped they were never scrapped.
