Freighter arrested in China

Sat Jan 18 12:32:14 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'New Orion' being anchored off Jiangyin on the Yangtze River, had been placed under arrest for non-payment of debts. The vessel has been undergoing repairs at Jiangyin from Jan 8 to 12, 2020, for which its owner Vercania Holdings Ltd. has not paid the Chinese repair company. The crew, consisting of 22 Ukrainians and one Russian, were reported to be the hostages of this situation. In addition, it was unclear if or when the vessel can leave Jiangyin, despite the fact that the vessel has fuel remaining for 14 days. Although the vessel remained heated and illuminated and had a serviceable galley, the crew reportedly has not been paid for four months. The crew claimed that they have been abandoned in China by the owner and now have only seven days of provisions left. On Jan 12 the ship was moored off Changzhou in pos. 31° 56.95' N 120° 7.03' E and reamined stationary as of Jan 18.

Detention off Johor

Sat Nov 23 23:49:17 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'New Orion' was detained in the territorial waters of Malaysia off the east coast of Johor on Nov 21, 2019. The crew was consisting of 22 Ukrainians. The reason for the detention of the vessel was a violation of the requirements of maritime navigation – dropping the anchor without obtaining permission. The consul contacted the crew, and the algorithm for further actions was discussed.

Stranded crew repatriated

Mon Jul 24 12:01:18 CEST 2017 Timsen

Human Rights at Sea (HRAS) announced on July 22, 2017, that all of the former crew of the "Liberty Prrudencia" were being repatriated. In addition, their wages have been finally paid after HRAS, the International Transport Workers Federation, the Indian Consulate and ship managers intervened. The men had been stranded aboard the ship at the port of Zhoushan since 2016. Seafarers’ advocates were first alerted to the plight of the Prrudencia’s crew in February. On Mar 10, Human Rights at Sea published a detailed investigative case study about the case highlighting the human impact of abandonment, followed by an op-ed piece published in April. The "Liberty Prrudencia" was owned by a firm in Mumbai until the end of 2016. She was sold to a Hong Kong-based shipowner in January and her original name, "New Orion", was restored at the time of sale. On July 23 she was still at anchor off Zhoushan.
