New ship set to hit Great Lakes
The Federal Beaufort is one of a series of new sister ships built for the Fednav fleet of Montreal. This bulk carrier was constructed by the Oshima Shipbuilding Co. and completed at Saikai, Japan, in June 2015. The 199.98 metre long by 23.76 metre wide vessel is diesel powered and registered at 20,789 gross tons. At saltwater draft, the ship can carry 34,564 tons of cargo. Federal Beaufort loaded steel at Immingham, England, for the Great Lakes last August and then took on a cargo of grain before leaving the Seaway for Veracruz, Mexico. After unloading there, the ship sailed to New Orleans and was anchored there when this was written. Federal Beaufort is registered in the Marshall Islands.
