Disabled fishing vessel towed to Dunkirk

Mon Nov 25 11:51:22 CET 2024 Timsen

On the morning of Nov 24, 2024, the CROSS Gris-Nez received a request for assistance from the 'Champ du Loup-DP.935903' (IMO: 9900241), which as located in the Pas de Calais traffic separation scheme (TSS). With its fishing net caught in the propeller, the vessel was unable to manoeuvre and posed a danger to navigation by drifting into the TSS. Initially in French waters, the fishing vessel drifted towards British waters. After notifying the MRCC in Dover, the Gris-Nez CROSS then deployed the emergency tug 'Abeille Normandie' to take the ship in tow, a well as the lifeboat 'SNS 077-Notre Dame du Risban' of the SNSM in Calais to secure the operation. A safety message was broadcast and the ships in the area were informed of the situation. The 'Abeille Normandie' managed to take the ship in tow for the first time. However, due to poor weather (gusts of wind at 58 knots, waves 3 meters high), the tow broke. On the second attempt, the convoy set off for Dunkirk. Once the convoy arrived at the entrance to the channel of the port of Dunkirk on the night of Nov 24, the 'Abeille Normandie' was relieved by the all-weather boat 'SNS 087 Jean Bart II' from the SNSM station in Calais. The tug remained nearby to shelter the convoy. After about an hour in the channel, the tow gave way a second time. The 'SNS 087' was able to re-establish the towing connection again, The convoy arrived in the port early in the morning of Nov 25.
