Ferry replaced by another GNV ship after fire

Thu Jun 25 10:55:47 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'GNV Azzurra' departed from the ASI dock in Porto Torres on the afternoon of June 24 and was towed by a tug of the Italian Navy to the port of Genoa, where it was to be transferred to a shipyard for repairs and comprehensive structural refurbishments. On June 21, the ferry 'GNV Altair' (IMO: 9222534) took over the service between Porto Torres and Genoa, which had to be suspended after the fire on the 'GNV Azzurra'. The 'GNV Altair', which arrived on the morning at the west pier of the Porto Torres seaport, provided service to Genoa while the repairs were carried out. The Porto Torres Coastguard has meanwhile launched an administrative investigation into the fire, which occurred approximately 40 nautical miles off Porto Torres in international waters under the jurisdiction of the French SAR zone. The aim of the investigation was to reconstruct the incident and determine the cause of the fire. Engine room fire off Propriano

Sat Jun 20 18:30:25 CEST 2026 Timsen

A fire broke out in the engine room of the 'GNV Azzurra' on June 19, 2026, at around 9 p.m., while she was underway enroute from Porto Torres to Genoa. The CROSS Mediterranée in Corsica was alerted to the incident. off the coast of Southern Corsica, 18 nautical miles from Cap de Senetosa—within the French zone of responsibility. The ship was carrying 763 passengers and 113 crew members. The crew brought the fire under control and subsequently extinguished it around 11:30 p.m. The vessel suffered a loss of maneuverability resulting from the incident. There were no injuries among the passengers or crew. Given the nature of the incident, the number of people on board, and the ship's technical status, the Maritime Prefect for the Mediterranean activated the Level 2 maritime ORSEC (Civil Security Response Organisation) plan to coordinate assistance operations and secure the situation. Several French assets were deployed to assess the situation, assist the vessel, and secure the area: - the rescue vessel 'SNS 17-07 - Cyrnos' from the Propriano SNSM station; - the all-weather lifeboat 'SNS 063 - L’Herminier II from the Bonifacio SNSM station; - the emergency tug 'Abeille Méditerranée', based in Toulon; - the tug 'Persevero'; - an Ajaccio port tug; - an Air and Space Force Puma helicopter based in Solenzara, carrying an assessment and intervention team (EEI) composed of six specialized shipboard intervention firefighters from the Corse-du-Sud fire and rescue service and a marine mechanic from the Aspretto naval air base in Corsica. The coordination with the shipowner and Italian authorities, specifically the MRCC Rome, facilitated the deployment of the Italian tug 'Alessandro Onorato', based in Porto Torres. The assessment and intervention team was hoisted aboard the 'GNV Azzurra' during the night to assess the situation on site. On June 20 at around 6:30 a.m., the 'GNV Azzurra' was taken in by the 'Alessandro Onorato'. The convoy, monitored jointly by Italian and French authorities, headed back to Porto Torres, where the ship was safely berthed on the morning. Two ferries chartered as accommodation ships

Thu Nov 06 15:40:04 CET 2025 Timsen

GNV has chartered out the 'GNV Azzurra' and ' Rhapsody' on short-term contracts as accommodation vessels starting in Nov 2025. The 'GNV Azzurra' has been chartered to be stationed at the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard in Genoa. There, until January, the yard will be drydocking the USS 'Mount Whitney', which is part of the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet based in the Mediterranean. The ferry will provide accommodation for the crew while their vessel is in the yard. The ' Rhapsody' was chartered to Costa Cruises. The ferry arrived in Marseille enroute from Genoa on Oct 21 and was moored alongside the cruise ship 'Aidaluna', also serving as crew accommodation while the cruise ship undergoes a drydocking at the Chantier Naval de Marseille.
