Tue Mar 10 10:05:04 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Guariste Primero" caught fire in the Pacific on Mar 8, 2015, at 7.30 p.m. about 840 miles southwest of Lima while catching swordfish. The crew of 14 was unable to the extinguish the fire, and went into life rafts. Before abandoning ship, the master Ignacio Coya managed to get contact to the Spanish fishing vessek "Cervera", which was 60 miles away. 13 crew members were rescued by another Spanish fishing vessel, the "Balueiro Segundo" from A Guarda, which had been 14 miles away. The chief engineer Juan Borda, Peruvian and Spanish dual nationality, age 57, resident of Burela, was feared to have been trapped in the engine room. Among the rescued were three Spaniards (two from O Morrazo and one from Ribeira in Galicia), four Cape Verdeans and six Indonesians. They were to be taken ashore with another ship. Their longliner was still burning at the stern and remained afloat for the time being.
