Grounded ship leaking fuel

Tue Dec 19 10:03:29 CET 2023 Timsen

The Ocean Conservation Administration along with the Taiwan Coast Guard was working to contain the spill from the 'Hai Shou', which has already covered 300 meters of the shoreline of Jibei Island, a small offshore island on Taiwan’s west coast. The vessel was reported to be approximately four-tenths of a nautical mile offshore and leaking 20 tons of diesel fuel. Attempts to put an oil containment boom around the vessel were unsuccessful because of the rough seas and high winds. The vessel has a record showing no less than eight safety violations in its last port state inspection conducted in 2019. At the time, the vessel named 'Wan Xing' was owned by a Chinese company, but has passed to new ownership in 2023 and was reflagged in Cameroon. The ship had sailed from Taichung on Dec 16, but shortly after leaving reported it had lost power. The Coast Guard attempted to help the vessel to anchor but due to strong winds and high seas the vessel had continued to drift and was abandoned on Dec 17. Taiwan’s National Airborne Service Corps. hoisted the six crew members from the deck into a helicopter and brought them to shore. Grounded freighter abandoned

Mon Dec 18 12:52:01 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Hai Shou' began drifting after losing power near Jibei, the biggest island north of Penghu's main island, after losing power due to a mechanical failure in the Penghu Islands and ran aground in waters north of the Baisha Township on Dec 17, 2023. The vessel was ballasting from Taichung to Kaohsiung, but lost power soon after leaving the central Taiwan port and got stuck 0,4 nautical miles north of Houliao Village. The nine crew members, all nationals of Myanmar, were rescued by a National Airborne Service Corps helicopter in the afternoon after the captain gave the order to abandon ship. The castaways were all in good condition and are being put up at the Sheng Kuo Hotel in Magong City.
