Body found inside sunken wreck
One body was found inside the wreck of the 'Jia De' during salvage operations in the Tokyo Bay on Feb 14, 2020. The local authorities identified the body as the missing Vietnamese crew member Nguyên Van Tri through a DNA test one week later. The body was to be repatriated to Hanoi in Vietnam on Mar 5. Huong Thao, the widow of Nguyên Van Tri, was carrying out the procedures necessary to obtain a death certificate, an autopsy certificate and a cremation permit. The vessel had sunk in the evening of Oct 12, 2019 with 12 people on board, including three Burmese, seven Chinese and two Vietnamese nationalities. Only four were rescued by the Coastguard in the morning of Oct 13.
Oil spill response continued
After the sinking of the 'Jia De', the Kanto Regional Development Bureau on Oct 16 continued to conduct oil spill recovery operations from the oil leakage from the vessel. They have dispatched oil recovery vessels to use absorbent mats and other equipment. Bodies of two more crew members were also recovered on Oct 14, while one remained unaccounted for.
Oil leaking from the sunken general cargo Jia De
According to reports, local authorities stated that oil was leaking from the sunken general cargo Jia De. Efforts to remove the oil on board the vessel is underway. The Japan Transport Safety Board has appointed two investigators to investigate the accident.
