Unified Command stood down

Mon Apr 24 10:15:19 CEST 2023 Timsen

The Unified Command composed of Tacoma Fire Department, United States Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, Washington Department of Ecology and Puyallup Tribe of Indians, with support from several other agencies, which was established to respond to thefire aboard the 'Kodiak Enterprise', was stood down on April 21. Over the last several days, responders alternated between removing fuel and pockets of water, to maintain the vessel's stability. All of the diesel remaining aboard the vessel was successfully removed with no fuel spilled or sheening observed during defueling operations. Now that the pollution threat has been mitigated, the Unified Command has stood down. The Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the cause of the incident. The final disposition of the vessel has not been determined.

Removal of water and pollutants priority after fire was put out

Fri Apr 21 10:42:48 CEST 2023 Timsen

After the fire aboard the 'Kodiak Enterprise' was finally put out on April 14, investigators who will look for the cause still were not able to board the vessel. First, the removal of the gas, oil, and water still on the vessel had to be finished. The biggest priority was dewatering the vessel to right it. The biggest pollutant on board were about 40.000 gallons of diesel fuel as well as some amounts of oil on board as well. Vacuum trucks hooked up to suck all the fuel off into a storage tank.

Fire crews accessing interior spaces

Fri Apr 14 12:13:35 CEST 2023 Timsen

Firefighting and salvager crews continued their response to the fire aboard the 'Kodiak Enterprise' at Trident Seafoods in Tacoma’s Hylebos Waterway on April 13. The crews were accessing interior spaces to extinguish hot spots and look for standing water. In the coming days, responders will ensure that the vessel is safe for investigators to board and for salvage work to proceed, including the removal of 55,000 gallons of diesel onboard. The Coast Guard and NTSB will conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire. The fire appears to have started in the forward portion of the ship and later spread through entirety of the vessel, prompting fears of damage to the vessel’s freon tanks. Although the smoke coming from the vessel has decreased, air monitoring has continued as a precaution. Particulate levels at the incident site and in nearby neighborhoods have not shown levels of concern. Dewatering operations were ongoing in order to improve stability as firefighters continue to apply water to the outside of the vessel to cool the hull. The vessel was still listing to port side and was surrounded by three layers of containment boom, and responders and equipment are staged and ready to respond if pollution is observed in the waterway. Vessels can request to transit the safety zone established on the Hylebos Waterway, and commercial traffic should contact Seattle Traffic on VHF-14. The Unified Command for the incident is composed of several agencies, including the Tacoma Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Washington Department of Ecology, Trident Seafoods, and Puyallup Tribe of Indians, with support from several other agencies.
