Patrol boat crashed into cruise ship pontoon in Cobh
In the afternoon of Aug 24, 2013,the "LÉ Aoife"crashed into a pontoon at the deep water quay in Cobh, County Cork. Engineers from the Naval Service started assessing damage to her bow above the waterline. The accident was caused by a mechanical problem which led to the vessel propelling forwards instead backing off. The age of the ship may also have been a factor. The ship was taken back to the naval base at Haulbowline. Engineers will be assessing the damage in the next couple of days. Damage to the pontoon, used by cruise liners, was minimal. Irish Navy detains Irish vessel off Cork coast
The Naval Service vessel L.É. AOIFE detained an Irish registered fishing vessel today, about 60 miles south east of Roches Point, Co Cork. The detention was in relation to alleged under-recording of catch and other alleged breaches of fishing regulations. The vessel is currently being escorted by the L.É. AOIFE to Cobh, where it is expected to arrive later this evening, when it will be handed over to the gardaí.
