Hijacked tanker returned to owner

Fri Mar 18 09:19:58 CET 2016 Timsen

Nigeria has returned the highjacked tanker "Maximus" to the owner after completing an investigation into the act of piracy on the ship. Owned by UAE interests, the "Maximus" was attacked and seized by pirates on Feb 11, while the ship was off the coast of Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. The ship is moored in Apapa Lagos Port since 24 days.

Freed tanker escorted into port of Lagos

Wed Feb 24 10:35:30 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Maximus" was freed in a dramatic night-time operation in which one pirate was killed in the night of Feb 19 about 310 miles southwest of Lagos. The tanker was escorted into Lagos port on Feb 22 with six captured hijackers from Nigeria and Ghana and the vessel's crew of 18 from India, Pakistan, China, South Korea, Sudan and Ghana on board. The navy was still searching for two crew members taken hostage by two hijackers who escaped in a pirate vessel, one Indian and the other believed to be Pakistani. The hijackers were after the ship's 4,700 tons of diesel fuel when they seized it Feb. 11 off the coast of Abidjan.

10 Indians and one Pakistani hostages freed

Mon Feb 22 11:37:53 CET 2016 Timsen

The Nigerian Navy assisted in freeing the 10 Indian and one Pakistani crew members on board the "Maximus". Probably the hijack took place on Feb 11, when two vessels were attacked. The last AIS data of the tanker was dated Feb 5-6, when the vessel was off the Ivory Coast. The attack was reported in the Gulf of Guinea on Feb 11 with one ship being attacked at 3 p.m. 50 miles south of the Bayelsa coast in pos. 03 36N 005 35E and the second 75 miles south of Abijan at the Ivory Coast which probably was the "Maximus".
