4,000 cows found in appalling conditions on board of ship suspected of cocaine trafficking

Wed Jun 10 11:26:56 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'Neameh' was apprehended near Gibraltar by Spanish customs agents and the Spanish Navy on suspicion of cocaine trafficking, was found to be transporting 4,000 cows in appalling conditions. She had sailed from Colombia on the May 4, 2020, headed to Damietta. Spain’s Health Ministry did not allow any of the cattle to disembark, nor the offloading any carcasses, with customs and police searching the ship unable to use sniffer dogs because of the stench, which was noticeable tens of metres away from the ship. Agents required breathing apparatus to search the bowels of the ship. Conditions on the ship were unbearable with the animals crowded on board. Many of the animals lay dead on the ground for several days among urine, faeces and feed, decomposing. Many others were in agonising pain. The search for cocaine was eventually called off and the ship allowed to continue its voyage. When the vessel docked in Damietta, 34 animals had died, although their bodies were not on board.

Ship in vain searched for drugs

Fri May 22 12:45:01 CEST 2020 Timsen

In the morning of May 21, 2020, the 'Neameh' was intercepted while transiting Gibraltar, and taken to Algeciras on a suspicion of drug trafficking. The ship with cattle shipment was en route from Cartagena to Damietta. She was berthed, and a search commenced. After no drugs were found, it was released and contined the voyage on MAy 22 at 9 a.m. with an ETA at Damietta as of May 29.

Ship anchored as cattle deal fell through

Thu Apr 07 21:33:18 CEST 2016 Timsen

The "Neameh" that was destined to transport more than 3,000 live cattle to Dubai was still anchored off East London on Apr 7, 2016, despite the original export deal falling through. The ship had anchored on Apr 2 and remained there while the export broker was trying to source other cattle locally and inland.
