Ship may have sunk on 260 meters water depth

Thu Dec 09 12:45:21 CET 2021 Timsen

The 'Narimoto Maru' remained missing since issuing a distress call on Dec 1 in position 10 26 24 N, 109 28 12 E. The 18 crew members have been safely brought to Ba Ria-Vung Tau. The forces were still searching for the missing vessel. The Port Authority sent an urgent dispatch to the relevant agencies to be ready to take measures to respond to oil spills and maritime safety. It was deemed likely that the ship has sunk below a depth of about 260 metres so it will not affect maritime safety, according to the Binh Thuan Port Authority.

Ship capsized in storm

Wed Dec 01 20:24:02 CET 2021 Timsen

On Dec 1, 2021, at around 5 p.m. the 'Narimoto Maru', en route from Lumut to Taipei, developed a list and was abandoned by its crew and capsized in the South China Sea, about 160 nautical miles east of Vung Tau in the waters of Binh Thuân. The ship had interrupted sailing towards Taiwan and turned around in the late night of Nov 30 and was heading in southwestern direction since, fighting a storm in the area, carrying a cargo of 9,300 tonnes of clay. At 9:30 p.m., the Regional MRCC received information from the Danish vessel 'Mathilde Maersk' that it had rescued the 18 crew members of the vessel. They were dropped off at the port of Câu Da on Dec 3 at noon. They were then taken to The Coast hotel in Vung Tàu town for quarantine. The Binh Thuân Port Authority requested the Phan Thiêt Coastal Radio Station to broadcast warning information and inform the owners of ships and captains of ships operating in this maritime area of the measures to rapidly detect dangerous obstacles and avoid collisions.
