Inspection in Orkanger found defiencies

Wed May 28 11:51:13 CEST 2025 Timsen

The Norwegian Maritime Authority carried out a Port State control on board the 'NCL Salten' in Orkanger on the evening of May 27, a few hours after the ship was towed off the ground at Byneset. Throughout the entire salvage operation, the Norwegian Maritime Authority had an action inspector on board to assist the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the shipping company, the class and the salvage company. After the ship had docked in Orkanger, the Directorate's Port State inspector went on board to carry out a port state control. As a result of the grounding, the ship has suffered hull damage that makes it unseaworthy. The flag state of Cyprus must provide written confirmation that the ship can go to a repair yard for repairs. The conditions for sailing to a repair yard must be approved by the Norwegian Maritime Authority. The Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) was switched off both before and during the grounding itself. This must be rectified before the ship can sail. The ship's ISM system (safety management system) does not comply with the requirements and must be rectified within three months. The escape routes on the ship do not comply with the requirements. The hatch to the emergency exit from the engine room is too heavy and is difficult to open from the inside. This must be rectified within 14 days. The Norwegian Maritime Authority has now completed its inspections and is now awaiting further plans for the ship, in dialogue with the shipping company and flag state. Container ship pulled off

Wed May 28 10:26:49 CEST 2025 Timsen

The 'NCL Salten' was successfully pulled off the ground on May 27 at 10.40 a.m. with the rising tide by the salvage company Boa Offshore. The tugs 'Boa Brage '(IMO: 9551894) and 'Boa Brage' (IMO 9462342), the anti pollution vessel 'Stjernoy' (MMSI: 257058890), the workboat 'OV Hekkingen' (IMO: 9887607), the patrol vesssel 'Njord' (IMO: 9353357) and the RHIB 'Fox Thunder' (MMSI: 257046620) were on site on the foremidday. At 10. a.m. the towing wires were connected. The Norwegian Coast Guard supervised the salvage due to the small risk of pollution. Boa Offshore has been working since the May 25 to lighten the ship by transferring containers to a barge and taking the boxes to Orkanger. 1,300 tons of cargo were removed on this way to make the refloating as easy as possible. After the ship was pulled off the rocks, it was first inspected by divers, before it was towed to the port of Orkanger, assisted by a pilot where the remaining containers were to be unloaded and the ship be more thoroughly examined. The vessel has suffered damage to its bow and forward ballast tanks. It arrived in the port of Orkanger at around noon. The police have charged the ship's second officer, a 30-year-old Ukrainian, with negligence after he admitted to falling asleep at the helm. The officer has stated that none of the bridge alarms that could have prevented the grounding were triggered. The NCL company continued to support the police in their investigations and also proceeded with an own investigation. Landslides at grounding site

Mon May 26 12:27:35 CEST 2025 Timsen

After several landslides near the grounding site of the 'NCL Salten', the police have had to push away people who were standing too close. The municipality has discovered quicklime in the area, which could complicate the salvage, after the ship ended up on land just a few meters from a residential building on Byneset near Trondheim. Since then, a number of landslides up to 50 meters wide have occurred at the site and several people have been forced to evacuate. One home that is in the risk zone belongs to Jostein Jørgensen, who has been evacuated twice in recent days. Johan Helberg, whose house was almost hit by the ship, was not affected by the landslide. His home is built on bedrock, He even did not wake up from the impact. Instead, a neighbor woke him up at five on the morning. The heating pipe of his house was damaged. According to the municipality, the number of evacuees is at risk of soon increasing. The quicklime has been discovered at a depth of seven to eight meters under the soil layer in the landslide area. The Trondheim municipality, was in constant contact with the police, rescue services and geologists. The ship's shipping company will also conduct land surveys Work to salvage the ship has commenced on May 25. The first step is to remove the containers onto a barge. On May 24, at 2.30 p.m. the removal started. During the day14 containers have been lifted off the ship onto a barge, which had been towed to the grounding site by the tug "Boa Brage". The boxes were then taken to Orkanger. Another barge was en route which has space for 24 containers. Once enough containers have been unloaded, two tugs of 65 tons bollard pull each will start to pull the vessel off the ground.
