Arrested in Lagos by the Nigerian Navy

A military vessel formally belonging to a European country navy has been arrested along the Lagos waterways by naval personnel of the Nigerian Navy (NN). The vessel now known as MV EMER, according to Alade was arrested because the owners did not get navy's approval before bringing in a decommissioned military ship. He said, "We arrested the vessel last week because it was formerly a naval ship belonging to one of the European countries. "Giving that it is was military vessel, the owners should have sought military approval before bringing it into our waters but they did not." Source: WorldStage Newsonline

Le Emer sold to Nigerian businessman at auction

The "LE Emer" whas been sold at auction in Cork for €320,000 to a Nigerian businessman based in London on Oct 23. The Uniglobe Group got the LE Emer, stripped of its armaments at the Carrigaline Court Hotel in Cork. Two rival bidders were also bidding from an opening gambit of €50,000. The "LE Emer" is to be taken to London after upgrading work which may get done locally in Cork. Later it may be used for protection in the Niger Delta to provide security for oil companies. Auctioneer Dominic Daly was slightly disappointed with the price that the LE Emer made, as one of five interested parties did not attend the auction and only three of the remaining four parties engaged in the bidding

Oldest ship in Irish Navy retired

The oldest ship in the Irish Naval Service, the "LE Emer" was decommissioned on Sep 19, 2013, after a 35 year old career. Built in Verolme Cork Dockyard and commissioned on Jan 16, 1978, the "LE Emer" was within 18 months of her joining the fleet, participating in the Search and Rescue operation during the Fastnet Disaster off the West Cork coast in 1979. Within a year of her commission, the "LE Emer" became the first Naval Service ship to carry out UNIFIL resupply mission in 1979 when she brought supplies to Irish troops on peace keeping duties in South Lebanon. In 1984 the "LE Emer" under the command of Lt Commander Brian Farrell played a key role in the seizure of the IRA gun-running fishing vessel "Marita Anne" near the Skellig Rocks, intercepting the trawler with 160 arms and 71,000 rounds of ammunition on board. At a decommissioning service at Custom House Quay in Cork, Among the other significant events in Irish maritime history in which the "LE Emer" participated was the Air India Disaster recovery off the south west coast in June 1985 when she relieved her sister ship, the "LE Aisling" in the recovery of bodies. Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Service, Commodore Mark Mellet recalled that in her 35 years of service to the Irish State, the "LE Emer" has had 23 captains and sailed 518,000 nautical miles. The ship will be put up for public auction in October at the Carrigaline Court Hotel in County Cork and auctioneer, Dominic Daly who handled the sale of the last Naval Service vessel to be sold, the "LE Deirdre", was confident she would attract a lot of interest as she is a much more modern vessel and being in perfect mechanical order. There were already a number of expressions of interest.
