Nordstjernen released after inspections

Thu Aug 21 10:58:16 CEST 2025 Timsen

Investigations of the 'Nordstjernen' showed that a minor technical problem had aused the stern to touch the pier. A diver was deployed on the evening of Aug 19 and discovered no structural damage to the ship. There were only a few scratches on the hull. The technical cause of the incident was found and remedied. The classification society boarded the ship on the morning of Aug 20, checked its technical condition, and finally released the ship shortly after noon. On the early afternoon, the 'Nordstjernen' left Rostock, one day late en route to Skagen with an ETA as of Aug 21. The Nordstjernen had to shift to the port of Rostock during the night because its berth in Warnemünde was needed with the cruise ships 'AIDAmar', 'Viking Sky' and 'Rotterdam' approaching.

Passenger ship got stuck on Warnow

Wed Aug 20 11:20:58 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Aug 19, 2025, at 6:45 p.m.,the "Nordstjernen" ran aground on the Warnow embankment when moving astern from berth 8 in Warnemünde into the fairway. Due to a technical malfunction, the engine did not respond when trying to move forward, and as a result, the ship struck the embankment on the opposite river bank, at buoy 24. Since the "Nordstjernen" was subsequently regained the ability to move forwar, it approached the nearest berth 7 under its own power. The Ship Safety Department issued a sailing ban. Initial investigations revealed that a malfunction in the pneumatic control of the controllable-pitch propeller was the cause of thefailure. With the approval of the Maritime Transport Authority, the "Nordstjernen" was towed to berth 46 in Rostock's overseas port on Aug 20 at 1:30 a.m. by the tug 'Fairplay 55' (IMO: 9021124). The extent of the damage to the vessel has not yet been quantified; the investigation was ongoing.

14 crew members arrested

Thu Apr 06 20:41:28 CEST 2017 Timsen

Police arrested 14 crew members of the former Hurtigruten vessel "Nordstjernen" in the morning of Apr 6, 2017, at the quay in Bodø center. The crew worked for many years for the company. The ship had sailed two tours in Northern Norway in recent weeks in the so-called Arctic Haute Route, between Tromsø and Bodø. The men were arrested on suspicion of violating the Immigration Act. Police was investigating both the work and the working conditions of those arrested. After Hurtigruten sold the ship a few years ago, the company periodically rented it from Vestland Marine to cruises and special sailings. Hurtigruten has hundreds of subcontractors. The Vestland Marine was founded in 1997 and now has its base in Gdynia. It started its operations with the passenger ship in 2014. The 14 arrested were Philippine nationals. The rest of the crew of 25 consisted of Polish and Lithuanian nationals, and two Norwegians. The company, which owns five ships, had hired the crew seven days on two different trips. Until April 27 the same crew worked additional nine days on two separate trips. The company said there has been a misunderstanding caused by different perceptions about work permits for non-EU and Schengen. The ship arrived in Bodø under the so-called NIS register (Norwegian International Ship). - But under the 16 effective sailing days they sail under NOR (Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register). On April 27th they would be back in NIS, before the ship will enter the yard in Haugesund, before it will be sailing in Svalbard.
