Dredgers remain in Lubmin after grease pollution

After polluting the Greifswalder Bodden with grease, the company Nord Stream 2 took over the responsibility. So far, about 70 kilograms of the substance could be collected. A leak in the lubrication system of the "Peter the Great" caused around 0,145 tons of grease to spill. After the accident, all five dredgers were ordered intp the port of Lubmin and were being checked for technical defects. Only when it has been ensured that such an incident cannot recur, the dredging is allowed to be restarted.

Dredger caused oil pollution

The "Peter the Great" was under suspicion of having caused a pollution with grease lumps on the banks of the Greifswalder Bodden since May 23, 2018. The dredger had been contracted by Nord Stream 2 for its gas pipeline but its digger suffered a leak, and the ship was berthed in Lubmin since May 25. It turned out that the samples from the ship as well as from the beach were of very similar compositions. The investigations are not yet completed. Meanwhile, on the shores the grease continues to drift ashore. There was more pollution north of Ladebow and north of the island of Riems until May 29. The "Peter the Great" remained in port for the time being, all four other dredgers involved in the work became subject of technical surveys.
