MSC container ship suffered engine room fire in Gulf of Suez

On the evening of July 29, 2025, a fire broke out in the engine room of the 'Pumba', en route from Damietta to Donghai with 29 Indian crew members and 21,000 tons of container cargo on board, while it was sailing southbound approximately three nautical miles from the South East Hamad oil platform, owned by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation. in the Gulf of Suez. The GUPCO Marine Control Tower of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources received an emergency alert from the marine control room in the Red Sea city of Ras Gharib, and swiftly coordinated with relevant authorities and dispatched four tugs, among them the 'Black Panther' (IMO: 9268095), 'Ocean Dahab' ((IMO: 9752864) and 'PMS 4' ((IMO: 8325183) ). from petroleum companies to assist in firefighting and rescue operations. Multiple attacks in Red Sea

on July 20, 2024, at 3 a.m. UTC, the 'Pumba' was attacked about 64 nautical miles northwest of Al Mukha on the Red Sea coast of Yemen. The captain reported two attacks on the vessel. The first attack came by an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), which exploded near the vessel and caused minor damage. The second attack was followed by an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV), which also exploded in proximity to the vessel. Subsequently, the vessel’s captain reported additional sightings of the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). Later, the Company’s Security officer informed that a missile was seen at around 08.05 a.m. UTC, which missed the vessel and hit the water nearby. All crew members were reported safe. The ship had departed from Jeddah on July 18 en route to Port Klang with an ETA as of July 28.
