Captain sentenced for negligence in maritime traffic

The captain of the 'Meshka', actually sailing as 'Rahma', which ran aground off Landskrone near Ven on May 31, en route to the Russian port of Vysotsk, has been sentenced for negligence in maritime traffic to a daily fine of 47,500 Swedish Crowns. He was found guilty of carelessly and with a lack of attention operating the ship, which led to it running aground with 938 tons of oil in its tanks.The captain had defended himself by saying that the nautical chart data in the ship's system was not complete. At the same time, he admitted that he did not have full control over where the ship was and should have discovered this earlier, stating that it was his fault and he could have prevented the accident. The ship was inspected at the Öresund Drydocks Ship Repair Yard ffrom June 7-10 and finally reached the port of destination on June 14. It sailed again on July 18 en route to Dakar, where it arrived on July 10.

Bulk carrier refloated

The 'Meshka' has been refloated by the tugs 'Svitzer Thor' (IMO: 9548366) and ' Frigga' (IMO: 9175250) on the morning of June 7 at around 8 a.m. The salvage began at 3 a.m. by emptying the ballast tanks. Before that, the two tugs had been connected to the 'Meshka's stern and bow. At 8.30 a.m., the vessel was floating freely and, after assistance from the tugs, was able to proceed to Landskrona under its own power. Pilots from the Swedish Maritime Administration and officials from the Coast Guard were on board during the salvage. The salvage work and the voyage to the harbour took just over eight hours in good weather conditions and were supervised by the Coast Guard. The bulk carrier was moored at the Öresund Drydocks Ship Repair Yard in Landskrona for investigations and inspections. Salvage plan submitted

On June 3, the Swedish Transport Agency received a document for a salvage plan for the 'Meshka',which ran aground off Landskrona. The ship can be salvaged this week. but the first priority was that the fuel tanks must not be damaged. The ship was empty of cargo, when it ran onto a shoal on its way to Vysotsk in Russia on May 31 and has remained stuck since in pos. 55° 52' N 012° 46' E. On June 6, the patrol vessel 'KBV 001' (IMO: 9380441) was monitoring the bulk carrier.
