Oil spill in port of Brake
On Nov 11, 2013, about 300 liters diesel fuel were spilt from the "Fehn Mariner" into a basin of the Brake port at the Niedersachsen Quay. The Technical Help Work (THW) from Nordenham was called to collect the oil which spread on the Weser with the rising tide in the afternoon. The accident happened during bunkering operations of the ship which had loaded components of a wind farm and was bound for Barletta. A tank was overflowed at 1.45 p.m., and the diesel oil ran down from the deck before the refueling process could be stopped. The crew of the bunker boat alerted the water police who informed the Brake operating agency of the Office for Water Management, the Coastal Defence andthe Nature Conservation Agency (NLWKN), whose team finally alerted the THW which attended with a task force of 20 men and six vehicles with special equipment for oil pollution control. A representative of the shipping company was also on site. It was tried to recover the oil with absorbents, more was caught by a skimmer and collected in a container. The operation lasted until the evening. The cause of the oil spill was found to have been a human failure of the engineer of the "Fehn Mariner". He had to pay a security deposit of 3300 Euro after consultation with the District Court Brake. The ship sailed for Italy in the evening.
