Search for missing crew member

Sun Apr 14 17:17:06 CEST 2024 Timsen

An SAR operation has been initiated following reports of a crew member going overboard from the 'Rotterdeam' off the coast of South Florida, on April 13, 2024 At ~11:18 a.m., deputies from the Broward County Sheriff's Office Port Everglades District were alerted to the situation. The crew member was noted as missing upon the ship's arrival at Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida). Review of onboard security footage indicated that the crew member intentionally went overboard 9:45 p.m. on April 12, while the ship was transiting between Cuba and Key West. In response, investigative units from the Broward County Sheriff's Office, including the Homicide and Crime Scene teams, have been dispatched to Port Everglades for further inquiries. Concurrently, the U.S. Coast Guard has been notified and conducted search operations to locate the missing crew member.

Medevac off San Juan

Tue Jan 24 08:43:46 CET 2023 Timsen

A crew of the Coast Guard Station San Juan medevaced a passenger from the 'Rotterdam' in the morning of Jan 23, 2023, just off San Juan Harbor, Puerto Rico. Medevaced is an 84-year-old man, U.S. citizen, who was experiencing an acute pulmonary condition and required a higher level of care ashore. Coast Guard watch standers in Sector San Juan received a communication from the crew of the cruise ship, requesting Coast Guard assistance to medevac the passenger to a local hospital. The vessel was approximately 84 nautical miles northeast of Puerto Rico when the incident was reported to the Coast Guard. Watchstanders directed the launch of a Station San Juan 45-foot boat that rendezvoused with the cruise ship just off San Juan Harbor and embarked the patient, his wife, and a cruise ship nurse.

Cruise ship rescued two refugees

Fri Jan 06 11:47:53 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Rotterdam' rescued two refugees in distress from a makeshift boat on Jan 3, 2023, Straits of Florida between Florida and Cuba. While one boat was empty, the second held two refugees who were taken aboard the ship in the afternoon. The ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale after a call at Cozumel when the crew spotted an overturned boat in the water. The captain announced that the ship was a known abandoned craft that had been discovered on Jan 2, with 13 refugees rescued by a Princess Cruises ship. The United States Coast Guard (USGS) had been notified of the abandoned craft and would be picking it up shortly to eliminate the marine hazard to other vessels. About 30 minutes after the first encounter, a second craft was spotted with two people aboard. The cruise ship adjusted course slightly to rendezvous with the refugees, both male, and took them aboard as their craft was not seaworthy for the region. The USGS was again notified of the encounter and would be prepared to take custody of the refugees as soon as possible. They would likely be repatriated to their home country at the earliest opportunity. After the rescie, the 'Rotterdam' resumed course for Fort Lauderdale, adjusting to a higher speed to avoid any delays and returned to its homeport.
