Freighter sank off Cheongsando - eight rescued, one missing

In the morning of Jan 29, 2021, the 'Samsung No. 1' suffered a massive water ingress in the foreward cargo holds about four miles southwest of Cheongsando island, Wando County. The ship was en route from Jeju to Nokdong Port in Goheung, Jeollanam-do with a cargo of citrus fruits. It issued a distress call to the Jeju Coast Guard at 6.10 a.m. Eight out of nine crew members were rescued by the Wando Maritime Rescue and the Coast Guard which had deployed SAR ships, air craft and rescue teams. The ship which was listing to port and was down by the bow, sank at 08.32 a.m. Seoul time 9.3 kilometers southeast of Yeoseodo, Wando, one minute after the crew was taken off by boat.
