Barge troubled on the Wester Scheldt

On Jan 14, 2020, at 9.30 p.m. the 'Zijpe', 898 ts (EU-No.: 2318118), coming from Hansweert with a cargo of sand, got in trouble on the Wester Scheldt between Ossenisse and Terneuzen in wind force 8. First the main engine and then the bo trhuster failed after water entered the fuel tanks. The KNRM-boat 'Dorus Rijkers' of the station Hansweert was alerted. It was decided to take a deck hand off. The skipper remained on board. The tugs 'Patrol', 'Multraship 13', 'Multraship 19', 'Multraship 27' and 'Multraship 18' were soon on scene to assist. The 'Multraship 13' 13' went alongside and established a towing wire after a crew member of the 'Multraship 19' had been dropped off aboard the 'Zijpe' to assist the manoevers. The dredger was then towed back to Hansweert. The tug 'Bravo' also attended and served as a steering tug at the stern. The 'Zijpe' could be berthed on Jan 15 at 1.10 a.m. The ‘Dorus Rijkers‘ remained on standby until the ship was safe.
