Blackout on Fraser River

Sun Feb 13 12:57:47 CET 2022 Timsen

The 'Seaspan Swift' was disabled due to an electrical blackout in pos. 49 07 38 N, 123 14 35 W, on the Fraser River, British Columbia, on Jan 7, 2022, at 2.30 p.m. PST. The vessel anchored off Buoy 8 in Steveston Bend, BC and the crew successfully restarted the engines. The tug 'Comox Crown' escorted the vessel to port.

Two LNG-Fuelled Ships Officially Join Seaspan Ferries’ Fleet

Wed Apr 12 08:41:34 CEST 2017 arnekiel

Canadian transport provider Seaspan Ferries Corporation (SFC) has officially welcomed two new dual-fuelled/hybrid ferries at a double commissioning ceremony held at the company’s Tilbury Terminal on April 9. The two diesel, liquefied natural gas and battery-powered vessels, the Seaspan Swift and the Seaspan Reliant, are said to be the first eco-ferries of their kind in North America. “The Seaspan Swift and Seaspan Reliant are the first of the next generation of vessels fuelled by B.C.’s clean-burning LNG,” Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia, said. Following their construction at Sedef Shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey, the Seaspan Swift arrived in British Columbia in December 2016 and entered operation in January 2017, while the Seaspan Reliant arrived in late February and is scheduled to begin service later this month, according to SFC. The 148.9-meter-long ferries, which can accommodate up to 59, 53’ trailers, mark the first new vessels added to SFC’s fleet since 2002.

First hybrid ferry delivered for West Coast cargo service

Thu Dec 22 09:51:16 CET 2016 arnekiel

Cargo coming to Vancouver Island will soon have a lighter carbon footprint, according to the Richmond, B.C. company that supplied the battery system for North America's first hybrid LNG and electricity powered cargo ferries. The Seaspan Swift, which was delivered this month, will operate between the mainland and Vancouver Island. A second ferry, the Seaspan Reliant, is due for delivery in early 2017. The battery systems for the two vessels will provide backup power and are expected to cut fuel costs and emissions by 15 to 20 per cent. Seaspan says it delivers 50 per cent of all cargo transported to Vancouver Island. Richmond-based Corvus Energy provided the large lithium-ion battery system for the ferry. Sean Puchalski, a vice president with Corvus Energy, told On the Island host Gregor Craigie that the conventional way of ensuring backup power is to have a second generator running all the time. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/first-hybrid-ferry-delivered-for-west-coast-cargo-service-1.3907831
