Fishing vessel saved from sinking off Wangerooge

Wed May 08 10:06:11 CEST 2019 Timsen

In the evening of May 7, 2019, the "Stella Polaris-SD 28“, 42 gt, suffered a water ingress in the Northsea seven miles north of Wangerooge island and was threatened to sink. The ship was located on the New Weser Roads. The German fregate "Nordrhein-Westfalen“ responded and sent a boarding team to support the fishermen in tackling the water ingress. The lifeboat "Hermann Marwede" of the DGzRS station Heligoland followed with powerful dewatering pumps which managed to cope the flooding. Jointly with the Navy forces the ship could be kept afloat. Other vessels in the vicinity as well as the lifeboat "Hermann Rudolf Meyer" of the DGzRS station Bremerhaven were on standby during the SAR operation. The "Stella Polaris" was then taken alongside the "Hermann Marwede" and slowly moved to the port of Wilhelmshaven. The crew of two remained on board, the electric supply on board was kept running by the lifeboat. The "Hermann Rudolf Meyer" and the multi purpose ship "Neuwerk" of the shipping authority in Cuxhaven escorted the ships. The other good samaritans could be released then. On May 8 at 2 a.m. the convoy reached Wilhelmshaven where the "Stella Polaris" was berthed at the Hannover Quay. The water police Wilhelmshaven launched an investigation. The trawler left the port the same day and reached Büsum on May 16. It sailed again on July 9, bound to Ditzum.
