Ferry remains sidelined after oil spill

After the fuel oil spillage, when the 'Stena Hibernia' was receiving bunkers from the tanker 'Coralwater' at Dublin Port on April 20, the ferry will not return to service until after May 10 and remained at the ferry terminal 49-52 in Dublin Port. As a result, the following departures would be operated until May 10. From Dublin: Tuesday to Saturday – 05:00 a.m. From Birkenhead: Tuesday to Friday and Sunday - 5 pm. Stena Line was doing everything possible to get the vessel back in service as quickly as possible and will advise as soon as the vessel returns to service on the route.

Oil spill during bunkering operation

An oil spill incident occurred during the refuelling of the 'Stena Hibernia' at an operational berth on the eastern side of Dublin Port on April 20, 2026, at around 8:05 p.m. Dublin Port activated its Oil Spill Response Plan immediately. The source of the leak has been secured, and the spill was contained within a confined area. Response teams remained on site and were actively managing the situation in coordination with relevant authorities, including the Coast Guard. Containment booms have been deployed, and specialist contractors are working to recover the material. The Dublin Port shipping channel remained largely unaffected, and there was no impact on other river users at this time. The Dublin Port Company management launched an investigation is underway to determine the cause and scale of the spill. The ship remained stationary in port as of April 22.

Engine failure off Belfast

The 'Stena Hibernia', while departing from Belfast had to be towed to safety by two tugs after it suffered an engine failure on the morning of Oct 12, 2024, at 9.30 a.m. en route to Heysham. It came to a halt off the coast of Holywood in County Down and dropped anchor, before being towed away for repairs. The ship suffered a complete loss of power during the scheduled departure from Belfast.
