The first vessel of the year to reach the Port of Montreal was the M.V. Power, a container ship that reached the boundary of the port, about 70 kilometres east in Sorel, at 1:01 a.m. Captain Vikram Manchanda helmed M. V. Power, which flies the Bermuda flag. It was the first ocean-going vessel to reach the Port of Montreal without a stopover this year. The M. V. Power left the Port of Lisbon in Portugal on Dec. 23. A ceremony to hand over the Golden Cane, an award given to the first ship to reach Montreal each New Year, is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
