Inacceptable conditions on detained ship

Fri Mar 29 12:15:33 CET 2019 Timsen

The "Virile" was detained in the Marina di Carrara as food and water were missing on board on March 6, 2019. The Coast Guard has also detected poor safety conditions including the inoperativeness of equipment needed in emergency situations such as the emergency generator, fire lines being corroded by rust, incorrect stowage of the load with the impossibility of using rescue boats. Unacceptable health and hygiene conditions were found in the living and working rooms. There was a chronic lack of provisions, the supply of fresh water was taken from non sanitized tanks in which oils and dead insects were found. There was rainwater infiltration in the cabins, inefficiency of ventilation systems and harmful fumes both in the cabins and in the engine room. 18 defiencies were reported to the Massa Carrara prosecutor's office. The crew of 18 consisted of five Indians, one Honduran and 12 Syrians including the captain. An e-mail sent by a Indian crew member, had alerted the inspector's office. It was found that the seafarers had been hired with a wage of $ 1,200 a month but actually received only $ 200 a month. The Syrian shipowner has returned 25,000 Euros to the five Indians and Hondurans while the Syrian seafarers said they received all the fees and paid the return home to each of them. The ship, which was carrying marble, left for Tunisia on March 21.
