Paddle steamer needs new bow

Thu Dec 03 12:43:40 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Waverley' needs a new bow in the wake of her crash into Brodick Pier. Operators of the ship are once again seeking public donations, this time for a Covid-19 Relief Appeal, in a bid to reach a total of £500,000 to plug a massive hole in income. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch was currently probing the crash, which the Telegraph understands is the third inquiry into incidents involving the 'Waverley' since 2004. A statement issued by Waverley Excursions said: "Following heavy contact with the pier at Brodick, Waverley will receive a new bow when she is dry docked next spring ahead of the 2021 season. The cost of repairs to the bow will be met by insurance, and not from funds raised through the Covid-19 Relief Appeal. The appeal must raise more than £500,000 in total, with a target of £350,000 from individuals. Other sources of funding are being pursued with vigour given that winter maintenance work is well under way with insufficient funds to complete it." Around £2.3m was raised from the public and Scottish Government between 2019 and this year to save the ship and replace her boilers.

17 injured in allision

Fri Sep 04 11:17:32 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'Waverley' allided with a quay in Brodick on the Isle of Arran in the late afternoon of Sep 3, 2020. 17 people were injured in the accident. The paddle steamer was carrying 213 passengers and 26 crew members at the time of the allision. Emergency teams including paramedics, firefighters, cops, Coastguard and mountain rescuers were alerted at 5.25 p.m. All off-duty 999 personnel on Arran were also called to the scene. A helicopter landed at 6 p.m. to airlift the more seriously hurt victims to Crosshouse Hospital, near Kilmarnock. Others were taken by ambulance to Isle of Arran War Memorial Hospital in Lamlash, four miles away. Before the crash, the ship had visited Largs, Pladda Island and the Holy Isle. It had sailed from Greenock at midday. It had returned into service onlyy on Aug 22 after nearly a year and a half of downtime to replace its boilers.
