Repairs of grounding damage completed
Repairs on board the 'Zelek Star' have been completed at the Tuzla shipyard under supervision of the owner's superintendent on Sep 5. The vessel shifted from the shipyard to Kartal anchorage where the remaining further repairs will be done. On Sep 6 it was moored in pos. 40° 52.60' N 029° 11.73' E. Upon completion of final repairs, pa erformance test will be carried out together with class surveyor.
Vessel left Ashdod for repairs
The 'Zelek Star', which had grounded on the Oranim Beach near Ashdod on Dec 24, 2019, enroute from Ashdod to Vasilikos after it dragged anchor, and which was refloated on Jan 31, left the commercial port of Ashdod on May 17 at 8.30 p.m. and headed to Tuzla with an ETA as of May 29 where permanent repairs were to be carried out. The vessel suffered an engine failure along with a loss of power southwest of Cyprus on May 28. Repairs could not be performed by the crew. The tug 'Söndüren 10' was appointed to tow the vessel to Tuzla, ETA June 4. During the Canakkale Strait transit, a Coastal Safety tug and a pilot provided escort service for the vessel. In Tuzla, the bottom section, side shell plating steel replacement together with renewal of ballast pipe line were carried out in dry dock. A welding approval test was under progress by the classification society surveyors. A new set of spare parts has been provided by the owners for the main engine and pertinent systems. The entire repairs were expected to be completed by the end of August.
Zelek Star refloated
The 'Zelek Star' was dug out by bulldozers during the recent two weeks. On Jan 31 salvors managed to turn the ship 238 degrees so that the bow was almost facing the sea, almost in the opposite direction of the grounding. The IHC Beaver 45 of TAM – Taavura /Admir JV dredger assisted the salvage work. The vessel was refloated on Feb 2 and towed to the Ashdod Port Terminal on Feb 3 at 4.30 p.m. A detailed damage survey, internal external section inspections was carried out by the appointed technical teams and surveyors. The incident investigation was being carried out by the Harbour Master. The costs of the salvage were $ 3 million, while the price of the ship was estimated to be only $ 1.3 million, but the Transport Ministry had insisted on the removal. The ship left the port of Ashdod on May 17 at 8.30 p.m. and headed to Tuzla with an ETA as of May 29.
