Acadian now docked in Charlottetown harbour

Sun Mar 17 12:41:59 CET 2013 arnekiel

The Canadian Coast Guard had to come to the rescue of the Irving oil tanker Acadian that was stuck in ice in the Northumberland Strait Saturday. The Acadian left Halifax loaded with oil and headed for Charlottetown, but encountered heavy ice in the strait. Wind conditions made ice conditions worse, said an official with the coast guard. He said one icebreaker aided the tanker in the strait while another coast guard ship would escort the tranker right into the Charlottetown harbour. However, ice conditions were good in the harbour and the services of the second coast guard ship were not needed once the Acadian made it into the harbour. The tanker is now docked in the city.

Stuck in ice en route to Charlottetown, Nova Scotia

Sun Mar 17 02:57:55 CET 2013 odinfm

CBC News, Canada, reported tanker Acadian stuck in ice in Northumberland Strait en route from Halifax to Charlottetown, on Mar 16 13. Two icebreakers are working to help an oil tanker get through the Northumberland Strait. Paul Veber, Coast Guard Superintendent of ice operations for the Atlantic Region, said that “..we've had to send the heavier ice breakers into the Northumberland Strait. The heavier ice breaker will escort the ship through the Northumberland Strait and then the Cornwallis will escort the tanker right into Charlottetown.” One of the readers of the CBC News commented: “This ship is in Charlottetown about once per week. In winter ice conditions it is frequently escorted by an ice breaker. Getting stuck in ice is nothing new for this ship and the crew are fully trained for these situations. It should also be noted that this ship is ice class and has a double hull. Much safer than having the number of trucks on the road that it would take to transport the product the ship holds”. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/story/2013/03/16/pei-icebreaker-ship-stuck.html
