Engine failure off Newcastle

Fri Aug 22 11:48:11 CEST 2025 Timsen

On July 30, 2025, the 'Basic Victory' suffered an engine failure north of Newcastle, Nes South Wakes. The bulk carrier lost its main engine about 33 kilometres north of Newcastle. At about 8 a.m. LT the 'Basic Victory' was drifting about 20 nautical) miles from the port, waiting to berth there, when the failure occurred, and started drifting towards the coastline north of Newcastle. At 5.30 p.m. it had closed to within three miles to the nearest land. Only then that the master reported the failure to the Newcastle vessel traffic service and asked for permission to anchor. Shortly afterwards, the crew succeeded in restarting the main engine, and the ship was moved clear of the coastline. After the ship berthed in Newcastle on Aug 7, investigators of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) boarded the vessel to collect evidence and interview the crew. The ship sailed again on the morning of Aug 9, next headed to Oita with an ETA as of Aug 25. “The investigation is continuing; and the ATSB was collecting further evidence into the propulsion failure and emergency response activities on board the ship and ashore.
