Cracked wreck to be demolished

The removal of the "Berkan B" sunk in Piomboni will cost € 36.000. The work will be carried out by Techno Srl which was contracted by the port authority. In a meeting on April 2 held in the prefecture in which the captaincy, the municipality, the Port Authority, Arpae and Ausl took part, the need and urgency of the demolition was revealed. The ship, which had been moored for years because it was seized, had broken in two during the dismantling operations after it had been purchased. The danger to navigation forced the institutions to act quickly to secure the wreck. Half demolished wreck threatening environment

The "Berkan B", which was abandoned in Pialassa, was feared to create an environmental disaster in the northern area of ​​the Pialassa dei Piomboni. The ship was languishing at a quay since October 2017, when it broke in two during demolition work which did not take into account the phases of lightening. The work continued for a few months, then the wreck was abandoned, and water was entering the stern, which together with the bow sinks deeper every with the mooring lines being at maximum tension. Very soon the whole wreck and its polluting load could sink and the pollutants spread up to the Pialassa Baiona. On Feb 11, 2019, a complaint was filed with the provincial command of the Carabinieri of Ravenna, for an imminent environmental disaster. The complaint was forwarded to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of the Environment.
