Collision off Heligoland
On June 7, 2026, shortly after 1:00 a.m., the 'Bürgermeister O’Swald II', a former lightship that served at the "Elbe 1" station, and an 11.50-meter Dutch flagged sailing yacht were in collision about one nautical mile off the port of Heligoland island. The crew of the former lightship, which was coming from Wyk upon Föhr, immediately alerted nearby vessels via VHF Channel 16. The MRCC of the DGzRS in Bremen deployed the SAR vessel 'Hermann Marwede', stationed on Heligoland, and the daughter boat of the pollution control vessel 'Neuwerk' (IMO: 9143984) was also sent to the scene. Upo nits arrival, a paramedic from the 'Neuwerk' boarded the sailboat and reported that the two Dutch crew members of the yacht, a man and a woman, had suffered no physical injuries. An engineer from the 'Hermann Marwede' also boarded the casualty in order to secure it. The mast had snapped in the collision, which occurred while the boat was under full sail. The rescue crew established a towing connection, using the 'Hermann Marwede'’s daughter boat, the 'Verena', and safely towed the sailboat into the harbour. The Heligoland water police have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. The "Bürgermeister O'Swald II" had been berthed in Wyk from 4 to 6 June at jetty 1 on the Alte Mole in Wyk. The historic lightship was on its way to Heligoland when the collision occurred.
