Fri Mar 08 10:48:34 CET 2019 arnekiel

The economic importance of nautical tourism for Schleswig-Holstein is continuing to increase. More than 2.2 million passengers are expected in the port of Kiel alone this year, forecasting record numbers like 600,000 cruise passengers and 1.6 million ferry travellers, the company said in its release. These are complemented by another 15 million Euros spent by cruise passengers and the crews. Out of the total amount, 10 million Euros were spent by passengers for hotel accommodation in Schleswig-Holstein directly before or after their cruise. In 2018, Kiel was visited on 169 separate occasions (143 in 2017) by 34 different cruise ships with a total gross tonnage of more than 11.5 million - an increase of 15.3 % over the previous year. 598,000 cruise passengers boarded or left a cruise ship at the different terminals, an increase of 16.5 %. To date 179 visits to Kiel by 33 different cruise ships have been registered.

The world’s first LNG-fuelled survey vessel, the "Atair", has been floated in Kiel after a building period of 16 months on Feb 28, 2019. The vessel was built on behalf of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) and the vessel’s general contractor is Fassmer shipyard. It’s hull and superstructure, as well as parts of its outfitting, were constructed at German Naval Yards Kiel. The survey vessel is destined to be used for wreck search and underwater surveying. After successfully completing all trials, the new building is due to be delivered to BSH in spring 2020. Wed Jan 16 08:19:00 CET 2019 arnekiel

The Norwegian shipping company Color Line operates the additional freight ferry “Color Carrier“ on the route Kiel – Oslo as of 11th January to increase its freight-carrying capability. On the occasion of its inaugural call, the Lord Mayor of Kiel, Dr Ulf Kämpfer, PORT OF KIEL Managing Director Dr Dirk Claus and the Executive Manager of Sartori & Berger, Jens Broder Knudsen, welcomed the captain of the “Color Carrier”, Nils Sivertsen”, to the capital city of Schleswig-Holstein and handed over the traditional inaugural plaques during the onboard reception. Lord Mayor Kämpfer: “I am very happy about Color Line expanding its capacity on the only direct ferry route between Germany and Norway. It strengthens Kiel as a port location and also facilitates the eco-friendly hinterland transport by rail.” As of now, the additional freight ferry offers three roundtrips a week complementing the daily departures of the large passenger ferries. Hence, there are 10 departures per week and direction to choose from on this route. Jens Broder Knudsen: “Color Line expands the eco-friendly cargo transport between Germany and Norway. Shifting traffic from road to sea is considered a high priority in Norway as well as in the EU.”
