Tropical storm caused changes of itineraries
As expected the departure of the "Carnival Sunrise" from New York City on Sep 16 has been impacted by hurricane Humberto. On Sep 18 the ship will call to the Port of Charleston, South Carolina. The ship was still planning on sailing to Bermuda once the Hurricane passes.
Three passengers suing cruise line after tilt incident in 2018
Three Carnival Cruise Line passengers who suffered injuries when the "Carnival Sunshine" titled due to an issue with the fin stabilizer were now suing the cruise line in relation to the incident. Susan and Charles Orgbon of Georgia, and Alveta Jordan Armstrong of North Carolina filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against Carnival. The trio claimed that the cruise line was negligent in its operation of the vessel, as it listed soon after departing from Port Canaveral on Oct. 28, 2018, The ship quickly returned to a more upright position and the cruise continued on as scheduled – but left many shaken. Carnival issued an apology letter to guests on board, as well as a statement explaining what exactly caused the incident. All three persons were in the ship’s Sunrise restaurant at that time. Susan claimed she sustained a spinal injury as she flew from a chair during the incident, Charles purported that he suffered a wrist injury as he tried to help his wife, and Armstrong alleged she hurt her wrist in a fall. Legal representation for the group says that they sought over $75,000 in damages and they hoped that the cruise line will adjust procedures to ensure such an accident would not happen again.
Issue with stabilizer caused cruise ship to tilt
On Oct 28 the "Carnival Sunshine" began to tilt to port side because of a technical error with the fin stabiliser short time after leaving Port Canaveral. During the incident, guests experienced objects such as dining plates and bottles falling off tables and smashing when they hit the floor. The tables themselves started to slide. Glasses and plates started to fall and shatter, The starboard side felt like it lifted. A letter explaining what happened was later given to passengers, explaining the technical issue was “not a safety feature”. There was never any issue with the safe operation of the ship and the officers quickly intervened to correct the situation. Following the incident, evening events resumed for the guests. Carnival Sunshine proceeded on its Caribbean cruise as scheduled. The ship remained fully operational- A number of passengers chose to fly home on the Oct 30 after docking at Dominican Republic after the incident, instead of sailing until Nov 2.
