Cruise ship rescued 35 migrants
The 'Celebrity Millenium', during a weeklong trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, rescued 35 refugees, among them two children, from a small drifting boat that needed urgent help in the night of March 13, 2023. The US Coast Guard alerted the cruise ship to the small boat. Once the boat was spotted, the ship's crew launched one of the lifeboats, and the 35 refugees were safely transferred to the cruise ship. Once the refugees were brought on board, they have received all the necessary medical attention, blankets, food and water. At the time of the rescue, the Celebrity cruise ship was sailing between Tortola and St. Maarten. The ship had left Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, around 5 p.m. on March 12. Once the refugees were on board, the cruise ship continued on to its next scheduled port of call, St Maarten, where the refugees were transferred to authorities ashore. The passengers of the cruise had only a slight delay after the ship arrived on the island to await the disembarkation of the refugees.
