Ferry crew saved capsized kayakers

Wed Aug 28 12:01:18 CEST 2019 Timsen

Two kayakers were rescued from the chilly waters off the Nanaimo coast on Aug 27, 2019. At approximately 3:55 p.m., BC Ferries staff received a rescue request from a pair of kayakers near Departure Bay. The kayakers — who were together in a two-person kayak — capsized and both landed in the frigid waters of the bay just as the "Coastal Celebration" was leaving the Departure Bay ferry terminal. Once the ferry was alerted to the situation, its crew contacted staff on shore at the ferry terminal, who then launched a rescue boat for the overturned kayakers. The soaked pair were quickly picked up by two staff members from the "Coastal Celebration" and were transported safely back to shore. The incident delayed the ship’s departure by roughly 20 minutes.

Ferry rescued distressed boater

Tue Dec 18 11:56:30 CET 2018 Timsen

A man was safe after being rescued by the "Coastal Celebration" after his vessel started to sink in the waters off Sidney between Morseby and Portland Islands in the evening of Dec 17, 2018. At approximately 6:30 p.m. the Coast Guard received a distress call from the man who said his vessel had started to take on water. He was rescued from the bow of the 20-foot boat and taken to Swartz Bay where he was later transported to hospital. The "Coastal Celebration" had been departing Swartz Bay when the mayday call came in and was directed to the scene where the crew first made contact with the boater rescuing him from choppy waters before crews arrived. BC Ferries cancelled the remainder of its sailings between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen Monday evening tweeting just after 7 p.m. that adverse weather made it unsafe to travel. Search for missing passenger

Fri Mar 30 21:16:12 CEST 2018 Timsen

A search was started for an elderly man who went missing from the "Coastal Celebration", en route to Tsawwassen from Swartz Bay, on March 29, 2018. B.C. Ferries crews were left with an empty vehicle at the 9 p.m. sailing. After they swept the ship they contacted Delta police and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. JRCC launched a search of the area with about five other vessels and a Coast Guard hovercraft last night. The area was reduced at 8 a.m. in the morning of March 30. CCTV footage onboard the vessel was reviewed and officials did not see any signs of anyone going into the water.
