Cargo vessel sank off Mexico, crew safe

Following an uncontrollable water ingress in the engine room, the 'Duban', being loaded with 1,500 tons of cement, sank 13 miles off the coast of Oaxaca in Santa María Huatulco in the afternoon of March 12, 2020, en route to Manzanillo de Colima. Boats of the Mexican Navy rescued the 12 crew members from Nicaragua, Peru, Honduras, Panama and Tanzania. The castaways received treatment from the Harbormaster office and the National Immigration Institute, while Semah Health staff conducted a survey and found that they were in good health.Despite efforts to save the ship, it sank about 13 miles southeast of the port of Huatulco. The Emergency Response Plan (PNC) for spills of hydrocarbons and potentially dangerous materials in the Mexican Naval Zone was activated.
