Report: Grounding because the crew used seabed survey data which did not show boulder

The 'Key Bora', carrying chemicals ran aground on Dec 28, 2020, because the crew used seabed survey data that did not show a boulder near a pier, an investigation of the MAIB has found. The tanker was approaching fish farming company Mowi's pier at Kyleakin, Skye, when the incident happened. No-one was injured and there was no pollution, but the ship's hull was damaged and there was flooding in its ballast tanks. The vessel was aground for about 12 minutes before re-floating. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) said the crew used locally-produced data rather than an electronic nautical navigation system, which would have shown the boulder. The MAIB has made safety recommendations to Mowi about its operation of the pier.

Tanker lost anchor

The 'Key Bora' lost its portside anchor at sea, after it departed from Immingham on Dec 27 at 5.20 a.m. The ship was enroute to Amsterdam, and the starboard anchor was still available. It berthed in the Hornhaven on Dec 28 at 3 p.m.

Grounding at Kyleakin

The 'Key Bora', while en route from Esbjerg to Kyleakin with 12 crew members on board, ran aground while approaching the Kyleakin pier, Isle of Skye in position 57 16 30 N, 005 45 06.0 W, on March 30, 2020. The vessel was holed in the number five port side and the number four starboard side ballast tanks. The vessel sailed from Kyleakin at 08.50 a.m., headed to Greenock. The vessel had 500 tons of leicithin, 1500 tons of rapeseed,1090 tons of fish oil as cargo. On March 31 at 5.40 p.m. it berthed at the Garvel Clyde Shipyard in Greenock for repairs. SHe left again on April 18 and headed to Amsterdam as next port of call, ETA April 21, 10 p.m.
