GC Rieber Shipping to sell survey vessel
Norwegian shipping firm GC Rieber Shipping is going to sell its icebreaking research vessel Ernest Shackleton to an undisclosed buyer after it negotiated an agreement for the early redelivery of the vessel from British Antarctic Survey. The ship was built by Kverner Klevin Leirvik in Norway for GC Rieber Shipping, and launched in 1995 as the Polar Queen and it was acquired by BAS in August 1999 under a long-term charter arrangement and renamed Ernest Shackleton in 2000.
New base for Royal Research Ships at Hutchison Ports Harwich International
Hutchison Ports Harwich International has become a new base for the British Antarctic Survey’s two ice-strengthened Royal Research Ships, the RRS James Clark Ross and the RRS Ernest Shackleton. The two ships are making their inaugural calls at the port in September before deploying to the Antarctic, where they will remain until summer 2019.
GC Rieber Shipping secures option from British Antarctic Survey
GC Rieber Shipping has announced that British Antarctic Survey (BAS), a unit of the Natural Environment Research Council, has declared its fourth option for a one-year extension of the bareboat charter for research vessel RRS Ernest Shackleton. The option will be effective from August 2017. The vessel has been on a long-term charter with BAS since August 1999.
