Container ship under repair in Ngqura

Thu May 21 09:39:11 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Maersk Londrina" has docked in Ngqura since May 12 where repairs were to be carried out. The South African contractor involved was Dormac Marine. The ship had reported an explosion in a container in the afternoon of Apr 25 April led to a fire 620 miles from Port Louis on her voyage between China and South America via South Africa. She remained adrift for several hours during which the crew of 32 fought the fire which was in her no.7 hold. By activating the CO² system the fire appeared to have been contained or even extinguished; however the master decided to divert to Port Louis where a thorough assessment of the situation and damage could be taken out. The tug "Ionian Sea Fos" provided external cooling with its water hoses. The container ship, escorted by the tug then made her way to Port Louis where it was apparently found that the fire was still burning. A team from Svitzer Salvage attended and additional CO² was deployed in the hold. Despite all this it appeared that no serious damage had occurred, apart from a number of containers. An assessment of cargo stowed nearby has become necessary and it was believed this might lead to the owners declaring General Average. The "Maersk Londrina" has since made her way to Ngqura for further repairs where she currently remains at the local container terminal.

Expolosion and fire off Port Louis

Tue Apr 28 09:36:10 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Maersk Londrina" suffered an explosion and fire in one of cargo holds on Apr 25, 2015, around 3 p.m. in position 15 44S 068 48E, 700 nm northeast of Port Louis resp. 400 miles northeast of Rodrigues. The fire broke out on the deck. A distress call from the freighter was recieved by the National Coast Guard (NCG) at 7:25 p.m. The ship had 32 crew members on board. They have tried to put out the fire with the available equipment. No injuries were reported. The ship, after having been adrift for soome hours, resumed sailing but changed its destination to Port Louis. The National Coast Guard immediately deployed an air support. A Dornier took off early in the morning from Rodrigues, while the patrol boat "Barracuda", which was on a mission in the vicinity off Rodrigues since last week, diverted course towards the ship. The salvage tug I"Ionian Sea Foss" was involved in the fire fighting operations off Mauritius, and the fire was contained in the morning of Apr 26. The master confirmed that there was now less smoke and that the situation was stable on board, while the crew began to trace the origin of the fire. The ship entered the territorial waters of Mauritius on Apr 27 at 4 a.m. and entered the port of Port Louis at 11 a.m. where fire boats continued to spray water onto the cargo. The ship had been en route from Tanjung Pelepas CT, where she had sailed on Apr 18, to Brazil ports.
