Medevac off Oahu

Fri Sep 23 11:12:55 CEST 2011 Timsen

Coast Guard rescue crews aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter medically evacuated an ill crewmember from the "MSC Beijing" approximately 69 miles north of Oahu on Sep 21, 2011. Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu rescue coordinators were contacted by the captain of the container ship, reporting a 38-year old male aboard was experiencing severe stomach pain. At the time of the report, the "MSC Beijing" was approximately 828 miles north of Oahu. Based on the patient’s conditions, the Coast Guard’s flight surgeon recommended the vessel divert course toward Oahu for helicopter medevac of the patient. The Dolphin and an HC-130 Hercules airplane launched from Air Station Barbers Point to assist in the medical evacuation. The helicopter crew safely hoisted the patient via stokes litter while the Hercules provided additional communications assistance. The Dolphin returned to Air Station Barbers Point where the patient was transferred to emergency medical services and transported to Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.
