Tragedy in English Channel - at least 27 dead

Involved were the PSP 'Flamant', the VCSM 'Escaut', the lifeboat 'Notre Dame Du Risban of the SNSM station in Calais, a French Navy Dauphin helicopter and the helicopter of the MRCC in Dover. The Dauphin helicopter hoisted two unconscious castaways and dropped them off at the Calais hospital. The 'Flamant' recovered two two men alive, being of Iraqi and Somali nationality, who suffered from hypothermia, and 17 unconscious castaways. The two survivors indicated that their boat had about 30 people on board. The 'Escaut' recovered two bodies before transferring them to the 'Flamant' in order to continue the search at sea. The 'Notre Dame Du Risban' recovered six bodies. Among the deceased, originating from the Middle East and the African continent, were 17 men, seven women and three children. It was not exactly known how many refugees had taken to sea and therefore were missing. The maritime prefecture expected that other victims will probably be found during future rescue operations. During the transit to the port of Calais, a medical team was hoisted by the Dauphin helicopter aboard the 'Flamant' in order to take care of the 19 unconscious castaways. Despite the best efforts of the medical team on board, rescue workers were unable to resuscitate any of them. The two conscious people were also taken care of by the medical team on board the 'Flamant'. They arrived at the quayside in Calais in the early evening.. All the bodies were brought to Calais in the evening of Nov 24 and then taken to Lille for an autopsy. The 'Escaut' continued the search until the early evening. The search has been suspended then. Another 106 people in difficulty were recovered that day in different missions and taken care of by the border police and the departmental fire and rescue service in the ports of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Dunkirk and Calais. Five human trafficers were arrested after the accident. One of them was coming from Germany, where he had bought rubber boats.
